Paint your interior door like a pro

Painting an interior door is easy when you know the steps—just follow these easy tips for a flawless, professional finish.

Start by getting your area ready. Lay down a dust sheet to secure your floor and belongings. Remove the door handle, tape over the hinges, and give the surface a good sand and clean. Make sure it’s completely dry before moving on.

For the best finish, lightly dampen the door with a clean cloth and water. If it’s a new, unpainted door, apply a coat of Dulux Aura Wood & Metal Primer. (No need for primer if the door’s been painted before.)

Now it’s time to paint! Using a clean brush, apply your first coat of Dulux Aura High Gloss. Start at the top and work your way down—panels first, then the rest of the door. Let it dry, then go in with your second coat. Try to keep your brush strokes in the same direction to avoid visible marks. Once everything’s dry, peel off the tape and reattach the door handle.

Want to take it up a notch? For a bold, polished look, paint the door frame and skirting board in the same colour. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference.
