How to Wash Paint and Clean Up After Painting
Finished painting? Here’s an easy guide on how to wash paint and how to clean paint from brushes, tools, floors, and splashes. Follow these quick steps to keep everything neat, reusable, and ready for your next painting project.
Step 1: Check your shoes
Before moving around, make sure you don’t have paint on your socks or shoes. This avoids spreading paint in your home.
Step 2: Wash your tools
Clean all tools like paint trays, scrapers, and edgers. For water-based paint, use warm soapy water. For solvent-based paint, use a solvent cleaner. Always dry tools to stop rust.
Step 3: Wash paint brushes & rollers
If you used water-based paint, rinse brushes in cold water, then warm water with detergent, and again in cold water. For solvent-based paint, first use a cleaner, then wash with warm soapy water.
Step 4: Store your brushes
Wrap brushes in a soft cloth or kitchen towel, secure with masking tape, and lay them flat to keep bristles in shape.
Step 5: Clean paint tins
Wipe the rim and sides of your paint tin before closing. This avoids mess and makes it easy to open later.
Step 6: Remove paint splashes
If paint splashes are still wet, clean with a damp cloth. For dried splashes, gently wipe with a damp cloth or scrape with a blunt knife.
Step 7: Clean sheets
Fold drop cloths inwards to trap spills, take them outside, and shake before storing.
